PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

THE ELECTRONIC ENGINE DYNAMOMETER IS NOW A REALITY !!

In 1990 SONDER RACING developed an electronic engine dynamometer for measuring torque and power of different karting engines. Intensive testing and development work in the following years - particularly on the electronics - has now resulted in very good reliability, improved accuracy and an easy to operate user interface.

Presently the product is the best there is, and has prooved to be extremely useful to engine manufacturers and engine tuners all over the world. (see some of our references on page 3).

FASTER, EASIER, MORE ACCURATE AND DETAILED ENGINE TESTING

Compared with engine testing on the racing track, the engine dynamometer has significant advantages:

* You can finish your test in less than half the time.
* You are independent of weather conditions. Not only if the track is dry or wet, but also independant of atmospheric changes in air pressure, temperature and humidity, which generally is very important to engine performance.
* You are independent of tyre choice and conditions.
* It does'nt matter if the driver is on the edge or suffers from fatique.
* Dynamometer testing provides much better (print), accurate (up to four decimals) and detailed (measurement intervals of 500 revs.) information on engine performance.

THE PRICE COMPLETE WITH COMPUTER ELECTRONICS IS 8500 EURO

The delivery comprises base frame to be bolted on to the floor, another frame for engine mounting supported by vibration absorbers, power transfer system to rotate the flywheel, engine cooling fan, electric start motor (220 Volt AC, 1.5 HP), emergency brake system, petrol tank, accelerator pedal, electronic sensor with cable and connector, complete PC (220 Volt AC, SVGA colour monitor, 16 MB RAM, 2100 MB harddisk, international keyboard and Hewlett-Packard DeskJet colour printer) with build-in additional data acquisition card, all necessary programmes installed and English user manuals. Switch on the power button and the computer is ready to measure.

The price does not include PC terminal furniture, nor any air cleaning equipment to remove exhaust gases.

V.A.T. is not included in the price.

WHAT CAN BE MEASURED?

The engine dynamometer measures times of acceleration between specified revolution intervals (f.inst. 5000-6000-7000-....-16000). The user determines the mode of operation by keying-in starting point (f.inst. 5000 revs.), interval (f.inst. 1000 revs.) and number of measuring points (f.inst. 12 values) prior to the measurement. Measured acceleration times are converted to torque in Newtonmeter (Nm) and power in kiloWatt (kW) for each interval by the computer programme. Additional columns add up the measured values. All measurements can be printed, and the customer can bring with him an accurate documentation of his engines performance.

HOW DO YOU MEASURE?

By power-on the computer automatically selects the main menu of the engine testing programme. Switch to the parameter menu and key-in engine identification number, air pressure, air temperature, humidity and mode of operation i.e. start revs., interval revs. and number of values. The computer is now prepared for measurement. Start the engine, warm-up for a minute, while the carburettor is adjusted, and make sure that the engine is running perfect. If you select stand-by mode on the computer, you will see the engine revolutions continuously displayed on the monitor. When ready to measure, run the engine approx. 1000 revs. below the keyed-in start revs., switch to measuring mode by hitting the "space" bar once, and press the accelerator to full power. The computer now calculates the actual time-slices needed to pass all specified measuring intervals and continuously display the values as they are calculated. When the last interval is calculated, all values are added and displayed as a quality indicator of the complete acceleration run. If nothing failed and everything seems to be in order, then press "enter" for accept of measurement, which put the computer back in stand-by mode ready for a new measurement. Repeat the process untill you have a suitable number of good measurements, where the average expresses the capacity of the engine. The average values are automatically calculated, when the session is terminated by hitting the "escape" key. If one or more acceleration runs fail (f.inst. due to "four-stroking" or ignition problems) these measurements can be ignored by hitting "r" for reject before you go on to the next measurement. If necessary you can stop the engine to change an ignition plug between two measurements.

The computer programme automaticly align all measurements to standard atmospheric conditions (ie. 20 degree Celcius, 1013 millibar air pressure and 50 % humidity).

The programme display 5 lines of free text, where you can register all characteristics of the ongoing test. All data are saved on the harddisk and can later be retrieved and printed for further analysis or comparison with other measurements. The present programme includes the possibility of graphical curves of torque and power both on screen and print-out. The programme also includes advanced graphical analysis features with additional ways of displaying and comparing measuring results both on screen and print-out. Furthermore, it is possible to select for constant display certain reference measurements (best tuning of the company).

REMOTE CONTROLLED DYNAMOMETER

Many customers has requested a clutch and remote control of all operations in order to have the engine tested in a separate noise-protected room, and the operating facilities outside. All the functions are operated from a remote control-unit, that also has room for the PC, monitor and keyboard. This version is delivered with a 12 V startmotor supplied by a 220 V AC/12 V DC power transformer. SONDER RACING can offer a remote controlled Sonderdyno, complete, at a price of 9500 EURO.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENT PLANS

SONDER RACING intends to carry-on the development of the programmes. Our current development work is concentrated on creating datafiles with track profiles from kart-logger systems. When finished it will be possible to calculate - on the computer - a certain engine's obtainable best lap-time without visiting the track. You can test and calculate in your own workshop your engines expected lap-times of different circuits anywhere in the world.

Later a programme will be developed to specify and control automatic run-in of new pistons.

Very long term development will permit data-transfer to neural network analysis programmes (artificial intelligence programmes). By feeding measuring results from a large number of engine tests, such programmes will be able to forecast the effect of internal changes to the engines port heights, angles, shape, etc.
